Your fall and winter home maintenance checklist!

Exterior Maintenance:

  1. Inspect the Roof: Check for damaged shingles, tile leaks, or other wear and tear. Address any issues to prevent winter weather damage.
  2. Clean Gutters: Clear leaves and debris to ensure proper drainage and avoid any water damage.
  3. Seal Windows and Doors: Check and seal any gaps to improve energy efficiency and lower heating costs.
  4. Winterize Outdoor Faucets and Sprinklers: Drain hoses, faucets, and sprinkler systems to prevent freezing and bursting pipes.
  5. Check Chimney and Fireplace: If your home has a fireplace, have the chimney inspected to avoid fire hazards.

Interior Maintenance:

  1. Service the Furnace: Schedule a professional HVAC inspection to ensure your heating system works efficiently.
  2. Change air filters: Change air filters regularly.
  3. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Replace batteries and test all detectors to keep your home safe during heating season.
  4. Insulate Pipes: Protect exposed pipes in cold areas like crawl spaces by insulating them to prevent freezing.
  5. Check Attic Insulation: Proper insulation keeps the house warm and reduces energy bills.
  6. Clean and Reverse Ceiling Fans: Reverse the direction of ceiling fans to push warm air down, improving heat circulation in the home.

General Maintenance:

  1. Trim Trees and Bushes: Cut back branches that could snap in heavy wind and cause damage to the home.

By tackling these tasks, you can avoid expensive repairs, making the home more attractive to buyers when it’s time to sell.
